Just tell your parent that you're a screw up and even though you know that smoking causes lung cancer - you don't care because you suck at life and want to die sooner.

How about just not smoking in the first place?

If you were with friends, just say that your friends told you that they wouldn't be friends with you if you did. Also, say you know that it's wrong, it was your first time, and you didn't like it and from now on, when people say they won't be your friend, you won't believe them or fall for it, because you're smarter now.

"the problem was that I wasn't thinking"  that one generally produces good results.  just be contrite and accept your punishment.  what the hell else can you say?  I was holding it for a friend?

Why are you looking for excuses?  You should apologize to them for making a poor choice and ask them for help to stop your new disgusting, fatal, stinking habit.

ok 1st off deny deny deny if you still can. lie till you cant lie anymore. if that fails then do the next best thing blame it on one of your friends. say it was either a. peer pressure b. you were just there not actually doing it. 3. they told me they'd beat my ass if i didnt.
if that all fails blame it on them and the stress they bring on you and try and bring up a time they fucked you over

if you are of legal age to smoke, just tell them thats how you want to live your life. If you aren't, then you should tell them your sorry and you know you messed up.  Say you just wanted to fit in and have friends. Tell them you will start obeying their rules... Wink

A lit cigarette accidentally fell in my mouth and I accidentally inhaled?  Come on.  Your parents are not stupid.  Trying to come up with an excuse is just going to make them angrier.
I assume that because you are asking for excuses you are not old enough to be smoking.  Suck it up.  Admit to your parents you were wrong and accept your punishment.  They will respect you for it.
If you are concerned about getting hit, call the cops.

If there is one thing parents hate, it is excuses. You messed up, admit it. Your parents will place a lot more trust in you if you take personal responsibility for your actions. Nobody forced you to smoke, it was your own choice. Your parents know that. So do you. Don't try to lie, it really does no good at all. While it may be hard in the short term, it will only benefit the trust your parents place in you in the future.

Just tell them you got hit by the stupid bus on the way to school. No offense, just ask them to help you quit smoking, I started smoking when I was 12 and my parents allowed me to and now at 29 (still smoking) I wish they would have punished me and helped me quit.
